Barcode POS Systems in Kenya: Setup and Buying Checklist

Choose the right equipment for the checkout you actually run.

Barcode basics

Barcodes identify products; scanners enter those identifiers into software. The product catalogue must map codes to the correct items, units and pricing. Duplicate or missing codes cause checkout problems regardless of scanner speed.

Scanner compatibility

Check USB versus Bluetooth connectivity, 1D versus 2D code support, staff ergonomics and the type of device running the POS. Test with real items and packaging.

Receipt printing

Confirm receipt paper size, printer connection, warranty and software support. Ask whether customer receipts, quotations and tax invoices are distinct formats.

Rollout and training

Label products where needed, test checkout and returns, train counter staff and appoint someone responsible for product master-data quality.

A note on product capabilities
